HUNTSVILLE, AL – The US Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) selected Kord Technologies as prime contractor to lead the U.S. Army Maneuver Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) Directed Energy (DE) initiative. The $200M, 3-year contract leverages the extensive experience Kord gained while leading development of the Army’s Mobile Experimental High Energy Laser (MEHEL) demonstrator. This new contract allows Kord to integrate 50-kilowatt (kW)-class laser weapon systems on Stryker combat vehicles to address the Army’s urgent need to defeat small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (RAM) threats. The new weapon systems address these threats with graduated lethality while reducing the cost per shot relative to conventional kinetic weapons. The system’s substantial magazine, low cost per shot, ability to conduct precision, scalable engagements, and its low collateral effects provide leap-ahead capabilities to our Warfighters.

In support of its directed energy M-SHORAD efforts, Kord competitively awarded laser weapon module subcontracts to Raytheon (Raytheon.com) and Northrop Grumman (NG.com) and has partnered with General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS.com), the Original Equipment Manufacturer of the Stryker vehicle. As the Lead Systems Integrator for this RCCTO effort, Kord will build prototypes and conduct a competitive, performance-based assessment and weapon system selection. It will then develop and deliver a platoon of four directed energy M-SHORAD Stryker platforms as a residual combat capability by the end of Fiscal Year 2022.

In announcing the contact award to Kord’s employees and subcontractors, Kord’s Chief Executive Officer, Allen Young, said “Kord is honored to be part of this groundbreaking, historical program to deliver an unprecedented combat capability to America’s Warfighters”.
